RANKS
They represent current or past positions held in the organization. Here are a few of the common designations.

Squadron Level
Commander (Cdr or CDR) – Squadron Commander
Past Commander (P/C)
Lieutenant Commander (Lt/C) – Squadron department heads: Executive Officer, Administrative Officer
Squadron Executive Officer (SEO) – Secretary and Treasurer
Assistant Officer (1st/Lt) – Assistant department heads (e.g., Assistant Squadron Executive Officer)
Lieutenant (Lt) – Held by Squadron Members-at-Large (who are Executive Committee/Board members) and squadron committee members

District Level
District Commander (D/C)
Past District Commander (P/D/C)
District Lieutenant Commander (D/Lt/C)
District Assistant Officer (D/1st/Lt)
District Lieutenant (D/Lt)


GRADES
They represent educational accomplishments, based on courses completed (new course names are in parentheses), but grade designations remain the same.

Seaman (S) – Seamanship course (Boat Handling)
Pilot (P) – Piloting course (Marine Navigation)
Advanced Pilot (AP) – Advanced Piloting course (Advanced Marine Navigation)
Junior Navigator (JN) – Junior Navigation course (Offshore Navigation)
Navigator (N) – Navigation course (Celestial Navigation)
Senior Navigator (SN) – Navigation (Celestial Navigation) course, plus completion of at least six of the major USPS elective courses (Cruising and Cruise Planning, Electronic Navigation, Engine Maintenance, Instructor Development, Marine Communication Systems, Marine Electrical Systems, Sail, Weather
