    WSPS HISTORY & COMMANDERS

A little history helps to explain how we started. In 1957 we started out as the Waukegan Power Squadron. In 2000 we changed our name to the Waukegan Sail and Power Squadron to better describe our mix of sail and power boat members, which is still our official name, but since 2019 we have taken on the name of America's Boating Club of Waukegan. Hopefully that name will be around for a while! We continue to be affiliated with our national organization, America's Boating Club, also known as the United States Power Squadrons.

Our Founders’ Day is June 19, 1957. On this day, after a Piloting class graduating dinner, a group of enthusiastic boaters held an organizational meeting, elected officers, adopted Bylaws and signed a petition to the United States Power Squadrons Governing Board requesting a charter for the Waukegan Power Squadron. Fifty-four boaters were involved in this endeavor. Most of them were from the Waukegan area with a few from the Evanston, Kenosha and Milwaukee areas. The petition was approved by the Governing Board on September 9, 1957. We continue to operate under that charter to this day.

This is a partial picture of the original Waukegan Power Squadron Charter.

 SQUADRON AWARDS AND RECIPIENTS

America's Boating Club Waukegan has been presenting awards to its members since the year after its founding in 1957 when it was first chartered as the Waukegan Power Squadron. The first award was the Bonehead Award, presented initially in 1958, followed by the Alfred M. Smith Educational Award and the Commander's Award, both of which were first awarded in 2004. Each award is described below, along with the names of all of the deserving recipients.
Pictured is the Commander's Award. This is an award that honors a relatively new member for an outstanding contribution to America's Boating Club Waukegan (Waukegan Sail and Power Squadron). Only contributions by new members during their first two years of membership are eligible for this award. The award committee consists of the Commander and the two most recent Past Commanders in good standing and residing in the area.

This effort can be for accomplishments in one year or be the cumulative effort during the member's career with the squadron. It is occasionally awarded to a student who has demonstrated exemplary support for squadron educational programs. The award committee consists of the Squadron Educational Officer, the current Commander and the most recent Past Commander in good standing and residing in the area. 2022 Educational Award Recipient Thumbnail

The 2022 Albert M. Smith Educational Award goes to P/C Jesse Bowen, JN  for what can be considered a remarkable accomplishment. Jesse has always been someone who gives his all when wanting to help others. This past year has been no exception. Jesse has voluntarily taught a plethora of classes, including a Sail course and a Marine Electrical Systems course, with all kinds of props and demonstrations. Couple that with two workshops he presented on Boat Handling and Advanced Piloting. Jesse also taught an extensive Marine Communication Systems course. naddition, he completed an in-depth Instructor Certification Course. This is just another example of how Jesse strives to be an effective instructor. His dedication to helping others goes well beyond our own organization. Jesse has presented a multitude of boating-related seminars to members of the Lake Michigan Sailing Club, each of which has been very well-received. All in all, Jesse is exemplary when it comes to doing good deeds for others. We thank you Jesse for all you have done and continue to do. Congratulations on being the recipient of the 2022 Educational Award. You certainly deserve it!

Pictured is the BoneHead Award. This humorous but honored award has been presented to a deserving squadron member since 1958. It is presented annually to the member, who during the past year, accomplished the most noteworthy "blunder" afloat or at the dock. This award promotes our willingness to recognize errors or mishaps and from them learn to be safer and better boaters. Nominations are made at the annual Change of Watch and voted on by members in attendance. 2022 Bonehead Award Recipient Thumbnail

The 2022 Bonehead Award goes to Cdr Fred Schuster, P for his rather questionable docking  technique. Rumor has it that Fred decided to do a 360 degree turn inside his slip. We will never know if it was intentional. Nonetheless, it was quite the maneuver. To top it off, Fred decided to go for a dip in the lake once docked, sans his PFD. Luckily he survived the ordeal. Hopefully there were no kids around to witness his display of what not to do when on the water. Congratulations to Fred for being our 2022 Bonehead!
